The Archives is dedicated to the discovery and preservation of documents, artifacts, and historical images of Northampton’s evolution into the community it has become. The Archives is open to everyone.
The Archives contains over 100 collections spanning from the 1700s to today and includes genealogy documents, historic property files, maps, books, and mixed media material. It is located within Free Library of Northampton Township and is overseen by the Northampton Township Historical Commission.
The focus of the Archives is to grow collections of photographs, postcards, genealogies, stories, and other materials which document our township’s past, and to preserve artifacts relating to the culture of Northampton Township for the education and enjoyment of current and future residents. We are also dedicated to educating the public about the information collected and archives.
The Geyer-Luff Reading Room was dedicated in 2022 to honor Virginia Briggs Geyer and Elizabeth Cornell Luff, longtime residents and founding members of the Northampton Township Historical Society, contributors to the preservation of Northampton’s history.
Staff provide one-on-one, one-hour sessions to assist visitors with their research inquiries including historical properties or genealogy.
Staff can record your history in audio or video formats, whether it be your experiences as a veteran or as a local school teacher. Record your history for future generations.
The Archives is equipped with a computer, scanners, and a camera to digitize family documents, heirloom items, and photographs. The digital files can be saved on a disc or memory device provided by you, or in the Cloud.
The Archives welcomes donations of local history and genealogy material that allow us to preserve and share the history of Northampton for future generations. All time periods are significant including recent history.
If you’d like to share an image, all items will be carefully scanned or photographed and entered into the Township collections and the originals returned to you.
To celebrate the 300th anniversary of the founding of Northampton Township in 2022, the Historical Commission established a historic home plaque program. If you have an older home located in Northampton Township and would like to purchase a plaque, contact the Archives. *
* Please note that purchasing and displaying a plaque does not confer any special status or restrictions on your property.
The Northampton Township Historical Commission has several items for sale. They can be found in the library’s display case, the Archives, and at Inklings Books & Such in Rushland.
